Waffle House joins the mission to #desertthestraw
The Ramsgate Conservancy encourages other restaurants to join the campaign and make a tangible difference to the environment.
THE Waffle House in Ramsgate is on a mission to minimise its impact on the environment by reducing their plastic pollution.
The #desertthestraw campaign was inspired by Taryn Burns’ of the Ocean Friendly Campaign. One objective is to raise awareness of the destructive capabilities of the simple straw.

The restaurant no longer supplies plastic straws with drinks and instead offers paper straws at R1 each to give customers the option of being environmentally friendly or not.
The exciting thing for customers is knowing they are supporting responsible tourism as money from straw sales are donated to the Ramsgate Conservancy towards ocean pollution education projects implemented by the ocean friendly organisation and the conservancy.
Restaurant staff recently made their first donation – an impressive R7 995, but the Waffle House took this one step further.
Their take-away containers are also environmentally-friendly and they use only cardboard and tin foil trays, bamboo cutlery, and paper cups with compostable lids.
They also only supply water in glass bottles and no plastic is allowed.
Ramsgate Conservancy chairman John Murray said: “This is such an exciting initiative for us, as not only do donations help to fund the conservancy’s objectives, but also immediately has a positive effect on our environment. It is in effect a double win for our objectives. We can’t thank and praise the Waffle House enough for this as they are not only doing this themselves, but actively challenge other businesses to follow their lead!” For further information, contact John at 076 9234567.
