Hibberdene Happenings: Ugu workers ‘read’ meters during water crisis
Surely there were more pressing issues to be attended to by Ugu?
YOUR scribe enjoyed a wonderful week away at Umdloti on the North Coast, which was lovely and clean and furthermore, had water. It was a delight having son Greg with for a couple of days, regaling them with anecdotes and information pertaining to his year in India.

He will return to the country for a few days in the near future, working on a completely different project. At the time of writing this column, your scribe had water, thank goodness, and hopes that the situation remains this way. One reader was intrigued as to why, at the height of the water crisis, a truck ferried several Ugu workers into her street, supposedly to read the water meters. Surely there were more pressing issues to be attended to?
Monthly breakfast
Join Mizpah Church for its monthly men’s breakfast at the church premises this Saturday, 16th, at 7am. Only R20 will get you a delicious meal, plus a time of sharing and fellowship. Contact Edgar at 084 5820772 for more information.
German bazaar
After the breakfast you have two choices as to where to spend the rest of your Saturday: you may carry on to the German bazaar, a South Coast ‘institution’ which takes place at the Bethanien Lutheran Church in Izotsha, and is always good fun and entertainment – a great place for meeting up with old and new friends.
And their cakes are ‘out of this world’.
Annual festival
Alternatively, if you are not in the mood for eisbein and kartoffelpuffers, head on down to the music and folk festival taking place at the Sanctuary of Love at Melville, where there will be a lovely variety of arts and crafts, entertainment and music on offer for the better part of the day.
Special market
Mtwalume’s next flea and craft market takes place at Koelwaters Resort on Saturday, July 7, from 9am onwards.
It will follow the usual format, with food, crafts, jewellery and all the normal flea market products, as well as live music by Andy Els.
An extra special aspect to this particular market will be the handover of crafts and ‘winter warmth’ goods collected by Sue Paterson and her band of helpers, to Johan Nel of Roepersfontein Ministries for donation to the needy and less fortunate.
The official time of the donation is yet to be announced, probably 10am, but please roll up on the day to make the handover really special. Once again, tables are free of charge. Contact Sue at 039 9721425.
Still time to book
Ken Walker is anxiously awaiting last-minute applications to attend the Methodist Church’s annual Winter Camp at Silver Oaks Retreat Centre in Marina Beach from June 23 to 27. Young people from grades 6 to 12 who wish to attend should contact Ken at 082 3790656 or Debbie Fletcher at the church office at 039 6992948 as soon as possible.
Eye clinic
This month’s eye clinic takes place at the clinic next Wednesday, June 20, from noon onwards. Contact your scribe at 073 1653961 for a booking.
Sincere condolences
Sympathy is extended to Amanda Vermeulen and her children Candice and Kyle on the death of Amanda’s dad, Dawid Kruger, who died in Lydenburg, Mpumalanga, recently. Residents of Mtwalume, and particularly of Long Beach, will be sad to hear that one of the developers of the complex, Paulo Baldi died in Italy recently, aged 82. He will be remembered by many.
