Fidler in the Hood: Trains and boats and planes

In our house, we need a pair of glasses to find out where we left our spectacles and it’s getting to the stage where we have to colour-code specs to locate them.

G’DAY, folks. Another week of slog over, the grey matter is taking strain and the old grey mare, she ain’t what she used to be. Pardon the pun, but when reaching a ‘certain age’ (hate that expression) we sometimes have difficulty remembering things, names and faces. You know what I mean.

In our house, we need a pair of glasses to find out where we left our spectacles and it’s getting to the stage where we have to colour-code specs to locate them. Dementia does have its compensations, though: someone said there have been terrible water shortages and restrictions. Really? I couldn’t recall any water crises… When? Only kidding, folks!

SA colours

Radio-controlled airplane enthusiasts throughout South Africa all know Dennis and Kitty Steenmans. Add to that, Dennis was a founder and host for both the SA national and world championships in radio-controlled model car racing (off road) in Pretoria. Little-known fact: three members of ‘the club’ were awarded South African ‘colours’ for this sport. Now you know. For relaxation, Dennis is a member of the model aircraft flying club at Oribi Gorge: a contradiction if ever there was one.

Grandparents’ walkabout

They married in February 1982, raised three children and ‘lived the good life’, as they say. Kitty is an active Hibiscus Rotary Ann and leading organiser of the annual ‘Rotary Grandparents’ Walk’ (oxygen masks will be provided free-of-charge).

Grandparents who take part will be sponsored for the ‘stroll’ from St Mike’s beach to ‘almost’ Uvongo beach and back, and Rotary Anns will cook up a five-star breakfast for walkers.

The event takes place on Wednesday, July 11, and it was suggested that the CO and I join ‘in the fun’. Another paradox, folks, but maybe we’ll have a bash. All potential Olympians are invited to enter. For further details contact Kitty (here, kitty, kitty!) at 083 2543883. All for a good cause, so hurry and support the Rotary Anns.

Big thank you

Finally, the CO and I wish to thank the unknown driver and his wife, who came to the rescue a week ago last Sunday on the N2. The incident could have had a tragic ending, but good fortune smiled on the CO. We were in such a state of shock that we failed to ask for names. The vehicle was possibly a Nissan Almera, NX registration, metallic silver. At risk to themselves on the highway, they came to the CO’s assistance. If the couple, or someone who might know who they are reads this, please contact us. We would like to thank you again. Yet another example of the kindness and spirit of the Hibiscus Coast. See you, Rob.
