The petition was supported by the residents of Tweni and Port Shepstone, who are sick and tired of overflowing dustbins and dirty streets littered with garbage.
Mr Morris said residents have had enough of the continuous illegal dumping by both residents, business owners and ‘out of town dwellers’ in the back streets of town, such as behind Oribi Plaza.
He said household garbage is also continually being dumped in the recycle bins in Commercial Road in Tweni, as well as around the premises of JTV Centre, Abington Spar, the library, whale deck, opposite the Caltex Garage, Freda Lane and opposite the Venture Inn Bottle Store.
The petition calls for a legal dumping facility in Tweni with skips that are fenced and locked at night and should be available on both Saturdays and Sundays.
Complaints from residents is that the Transfer Station for garden refuse is too small to accommodate garden service owners, who are dumping in volume at this station and that it is very seldom emptied.
Mr Morris said the ratepayers’ association was also calling for prosecution for illegal dumping. (People are warned that CCTV cameras are now monitoring these spots.)
He appeals to business owners and residents in complexes to not put refuse out over weekends or before collection days, as these bags are invariably torn open by the homeless or monkeys looking for food.
A further appeal is made to residents to report illegal dumping. Registration numbers and photographs will facilitate prosecution, so please assist in keeping streets and bush free from garbage. Illegal dumping can be reported to the ratepayers’ association at 082 9099995.
