Child (3) killed in N2 toll accident, driver arrested

Police arrested the driver as he was found to be under the influence.

Police say a man has been charged with culpable homicide and driving under the influence after his vehicle overturned on the N2 toll road near Umtentweni, claiming the life of three-year-old Jodash Pillay of Marburg.

Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid, said the vehicle overturned on the northbound lane last Saturday at about 10.30pm. “The 37-year-old driver was arrested as he was found to be under the influence of alcohol. He was taken to hospital for blood samples to be taken. Some of his passengers were also injuries and were transported to hospital,” she said.

The driver appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Monday this week and the case was postponed to September 21 for the blood test results and post-mortem report.
