Umtamvuna Views: Sardines make a spectacular appearance

There are still big shoals coming through from the Eastern Cape, so hopefully the Umtamvuna area may still see the silver fish!

WOW… Sardines finally made an appearance this year! After almost ten years of ‘sardine drought’, the little fish arrived in big black shoals. Even though the biggest hauls were around Scottburgh, there were some nice catches off Margate.

Port Edward spotters reported spectacular jumping action from sharks, dolphins and whales. Surprisingly, there have been no sea birds tagging along with the fish. There are still big shoals coming through from the Eastern Cape, so hopefully the Umtamvuna area may still see the silver fish!

Well-known Southbroom resident and author Libby Cochrane visited the oldest bookshop in the world on her recent trip. The store Bertrand Chiado in Rua Garrett, Lisbon, opened its doors in 1732.

Happy birthday

Elsa du Plessis of Port Edward celebrated a milestone birthday on June 14. She turned 70 and celebrated with work colleagues at the newly-opened restaurant at the Caribbean Estate last Friday. Elsa is the principal at Turtle Creek School in Port Edward.

Three cheers to Port Edward’s latest septuagenarian Elsa du Plessis, who celebrated her 70th birthday last week.

Beach walks

Mzimkhulu Honorary Officers, in conjunction with Walking in Nature and South Coast Tourism, will host the ‘Shoreline’ walks this year. Each walk is about 5km long (in a southerly direction) and the second leg will be this Sunday (24th) from Hibberdene to Umzumbe beach. The next leg on July 8 will be from Umzumbe to Southport Beach. The registration charge is R20pp and walks start at 7.30am. Breakfast buns will be on sale.

Open gardens

The Leisure Bay indigenous open gardens were very well attended last weekend. The four garden hosts, namely Libby Goodall, Merle Strachan, Steph Breedt and Mark Gettliffe worked very hard to put their respective gardens in order. Many friends in the community assisted with manning tables and providing eats for visitors. All proceeds will go towards maintaining a good natural environment in Leisure Bay. Well done to all involved.

Catherine and Lionel Oldacre thoroughly enjoyed viewing the indigenous gardens in Leisure Bay.

Fun Father’s Day

Anyone who has visited Mbabala Lodge in Munster will agree that the complex is set in a delightfully beautiful estate. A group of residents decided to celebrate Fathers’ Day by having a braai/picnic on the lawn overlooking the lovely dam, filled with masses of blue water lilies. The weather was perfect and the outing was enjoyed by everyone. All news to Philippa.

Mbabala residents (back, from left) Pat Fourie, Janice Golding, Joey Andersen, Louis Fourie, Steve Golding, Sandy MacHarry, Helga Motz, Joan Lindsey and Sergio and Pat Ruperto (in front) celebrated Father’s Day with a fun braai next to the dam at the complex.
