Three more rabies cases confirmed along mid-south coast

Owners of dogs in the surrounding areas were all informed and are urged to come in to the vet for vaccinations.

PET owners are urged to have their dogs vaccinated, following the report of three positive cases of rabies in the mid-south coast region of KwaZulu-Natal recently.

The three dogs, one from Renishaw, one from Scottburgh/Dududu and another from Umkomaas, were brought into Scott Vet in Park Rynie and, according to Dr Peter Biden, in one of the cases the owner of the dog had been unaware that his dog had been infected.

Nothing could be done for any of the three animals, which were euthanised. The Port Shepstone State Vet has been notified of the cases.

“The signs were not typical of rabies. The dogs were simply lethargic with no appetite, a so-called ‘dumb’ form of rabies. The bodies were collected by the State Vet and taken to the Regional State Vet Lab in Pietermaritzburg, where they confirmed positive for rabies,” said Dr Biden.

Owners of dogs in the surrounding vicinity were all informed and urged to come in to the vet for vaccinations.

“The public is reminded that, if they are bitten by a rabid dog or have saliva contact and do not get rabies vaccinations themselves, contracting this disease will result in death,” Dr Biden said.
