Local bobbin lace artists win prizes at Royal Agricultural Show
Bobbin lace is a lace textile made by braiding and twisting lengths of thread, which are wound on bobbins to manage them. As the work progresses, the weaving is held in place with pins set in a lace pillow, the placement of the pins usually determined by a pattern or pricking pinned on the pillow.
Local bobbin lace artists of the South Coast Lace Group walked off with several awards at the Royal Agricultural Show in Pietermaritzburg this year. Rosemarie van der Merwe took a second place prize, Lee DeMeillon received the Cup prize, two highly commended and a second place prize, Lulu Bridger got two highly commended and one second place prize while Jenny Hutchinson walked away with three highly commended and a second place prize.

Ms Bridger said that bobbin and needlepoint lace have long been highly prized and these awards have boosted the women’s confidence.

The women said that they had always been intrigued by lace makers and seeing one in action was so exciting. “We were coerced into taking lessons from renowned lace maker, Ms Bridger and, to this day we have not regretted the decision.
“After walking off with our awards at the Royal Agricultural Show, the stakes were upped. Once you have won, you enter a different league and the pressure starts to mount,” they smiled.
