First-ever exciting Umtamvuna Sardine Festival launches in July
Celebrate the best the Umtamvuna area has to offer with this inaugural community and family-inspired festival, which is set to become an annual calendar highlight.
Known mainly as a picturesque wedding and film destination, the Umtamvuna area at Port Edward on the KZN South Coast is also fast becoming a lifestyle tourism destination, with abundant quality experiences all round.
Aimed at introducing these experiences to visitors, the first ever Umtamvuna Sardine Festival will be held on 6-8 July 2018 at the festival grounds of easily accessible lifestyle centre, Mattison Square, just off the scenic R61.

Celebrate the best the Umtamvuna area has to offer with this inaugural community and family-inspired festival, which is set to become an annual calendar highlight. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of local activities and entertainment, from food & craft stalls, live music, nature reserve running, walking and MTB trails, Zulu and Portuguese dancers, kiddies games, a treasure hunt and much more.
For the active, do a running or mountain biking trail or check out the boot camp displays at the festival.
For foodies, don’t miss the Umtamvuna Sardine Food & Wine Fest at MacBanana lifestyle centre. Festival arena food stalls at Mattison Square will sell biltong, lamb on the spit, popcorn, Mexican, Portuguese and Indian food, English fish and chips, jaffel and chips, schwarmas, burgers and bacon and egg rolls. For those with a sweet tooth, treats include candyfloss and slush puppies.
Festival entertainment will be provided by DJ and MC, Riaan Brits and Eddie George, fire dancers, live music performers, Mount Nebo Zulu dancers, Portuguese dancers and a singer. For R150, festival goers can also see The Gentry and enjoy a buffet lamb on the spit.
Shoppers can pick up unique arts and crafts at stalls and Mattison Square businesses will be running great specials during the festival. There will also be lots of prizes to be won, including a Miss Umtamvuna Pageant and a treasure hunt.
Confirmed stalls include jewellery, stainless steel and wrought iron décor, clothing and handbags, flowers, tools, complementary medicine and dream catchers.
A fundraiser for the SPCA and an auction for the upkeep of the Portuguese monument will be part of this year’s festival. There will also be a Mariners Mass on the Sunday.
If you’ve ever wondered about the story of the famous Portuguese shipwreck, the Sao Joao, Cllr Dave Watson will be sharing it with festival goers as part of the programme, which is yet to be finalised, so watch this space for a final update.
