Sandspit beach clean-up only tackles the tip of the iceberg

Heaps of rubbish still need to be collected along the river bank.

Richard Green, the man behind last Sunday’s beach clean-up, is calling on everyone NOT to litter and, if you are visiting the beach, to take a packet along and help pick up rubbish.

This was the fourth ‘Sunday Session’, which consisted of a Sandspit beach clean-up followed by a fish braai on the river banks at the Mzimkhulu Marina.

Sadly, only a handful of people pitched to help, but everyone is urged to attend the next one – Saturday, July 28 from 9am to 3pm.

Brooke Unsworth (13), visiting from Hillcrest, helped to clean up the Sandspit last Sunday.

Come bring a picnic basket and join the clean-up even if it’s for half-an-hour.

Sunday Sessions will be on Sunday, July 29 from 1pm to sundown.

Those who did join, mostly out-of-town visitors, did a fabulous job picking up bags of rubbish.

“Thanks to Gary Manggos from Ray Nkonyeni Municipality for giving us the plastic bags and for collecting the full bags afterwards,” said Richard.

There are concerning heaps of litter along the Mzimkhulu River and on the beach to still be collected.

But remember, every bit of trash removed and probably disposed of helps save our environment, which is under tremendous strain.

Helping at the clean-up are Salona Novak (midddle) with her daughter, Azaia visiting from America with her nephews from Marburg, Yuraav (right) and Yuvaan Baldrash.
