He died just a day before his 70th birthday.

Club outing
Trafalgar Garden Club enjoyed an outing to Stephward Estate in Uvongo last week. The 20 members enjoyed a talk by Howard, who spoke on global warming and the inevitable subsequent extinction of many plant species.
He believes that global inter-exchange of plants would actually benefit the continuation of a broad spectrum of plant life that would otherwise die out.
The idea of remaining indigenous is, in his opinion, short-sighted and he has been growing and exporting orchids for many years.
According to him, orchids are the greatest genre of all plants and garden club members were taken on a tour of the vast collection of orchids growing in tunnels. He reminded everyone of the upcoming orchid show at the Margate Methodist Church hall this coming weekend, July 6th and 7th. The entrance fee of R15 includes a cuppa.
Blooming fun
A whole carriage on the steam train, which carries about 150 people on a scenic ride through ‘Alan Paton Country’ was booked for 25 pensioners last Sunday. The Aloe Train chugged out of Creighton Station with the carriage of locals in a truly festive spirit.

It wound through the pastures of the lush farming area and through a valley of hundreds, maybe thousands, of blazing flowering aloes with a crystal clear river running through it. The train stopped for a spell by the river and the cart-load of crazy pensioners disembarked with lunch baskets, chairs and picnic rugs.

The weather was mild and perfect and it was a truly splendid experience. After an hour or so the train returned from its end destination of ‘Riverside’ (a once-booming settlement in the heart of agricultural East Griqualand, but sadly now derelict) and picked up the picnickers.
Sandy turns 60
Sandy Grimaldi became the latest Port Edward sexagenarian last Sunday, July 1. Friends and family members came from all over the country to share this special milestone birthday with him, his wife Lynn and their children who live in SA. The couple hosted a wonderful birthday party at Spuds Pub and Grill and guests partied to the music of local entertainer ‘Billy the Skit’. The Grimaldi family left on July 3 for Ireland to visit two daughters who could not travel to SA.
