Mandela Day: Hibberdene Lions collect food for the less fortunate

The collection will be shared between Reinhardt's Place and the Sacred Heart Children's Home, roughly in proportion to the number of residents at each establishment.

As part of a nationwide drive by Lions clubs and Pick n Pay to collect food for the needy, Hibberdene Lions spent three days in the entrance to their local Pick n Pay store and amassed almost R4 000-worth of groceries, donated by the generous shoppers.

In metropolitan areas the collections from all the clubs were sent to central food banks for packing and distribution. Outlying clubs, such as those on the South Coast, were permitted to choose beneficiaries in their local communities and the Hibberdene collection will be shared between Reinhardt’s Place and the Sacred Heart Children’s Home, roughly in proportion to the number of residents at each establishment.

Chantale Loretz of Mtwalume adds to the Lions’ collection of groceries at Hibberdene Pick n Pay.

“It was heart-warming to see how people managed to find a little extra from their budgets, even though it was mid-month and money was tight,” said club president Lion Susan Smuts-Steyn. “The club thanks all those who contributed and also the wonderfully supportive staff at the store.”
