Tamil prayer

One of the grandest festivals of the South Indian community is the Mariamman prayer (porridge prayer). The word Mari has a Tamil origin meaning ‘rain’ and the Tamil word Amman means ‘mother’. She was worshipped by the ancient Tamils as she was believed to bring rain and hence prosperity to them as their vegetation was mainly dependent upon rain. The Port Shepstone Tamil Association will hold its annual Maha Mariamman prayer at the temple on Sunday, July 29 at 10.30am.
