Ugu water services head quits amid rumours of ‘contractor pressure’, insiders claim

Ms Cele's resignation was effective from last week Thursday, municipal manager DD Naidoo confirmed.

Another manager at Ugu municipality has resigned. The water services general manager resigned from her role at the municipality a few months before her contract expires at Ugu.

Lungi Cele (38) resigned 12 years after having joined Ugu. Her contract was to expire in May 2019.

Mrs Cele’s resignation follows two other resignations by senior officials within Ugu.

The general manager corporate services resigned in April this year, followed by senior manager water services, Chuma Mqoboli, who resigned two months ago.

Rumours that senior manager operations, Paul Watson, was to follow the latter were quickly dismissed by the municipality.

Ms Cele’s resignation was effective from last week Thursday, municipal manager DD Naidoo confirmed.

Insiders claim her resignation followed mounting pressure from senior management and a certain ‘contractor’ with close relations to a senior official, who made it difficult for most managers to carry out their duties. “This contractor runs Ugu municipality and this municipality will soon be in trouble if this continues,” claimed an insider.

Ugu South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) chairman, Mthandeni Ngcobo, said the union wished Mrs Cele well on her new career journey.

“We have been informed that she is taking a new position elsewhere; we wish her all the best.”
