8-Ball player Clifford Keys is back from Blackpool

He managed a creditable seventh position at the world championships.

Clifford Keys (35) of Southport expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all those who helped him achieve his dream to play at the World 8-Ball Pool Championships in Blackpool, England, in June.

“Unfortunately, I came seventh out of eight players and my countryman, Ryan Kisten from Eastern Gauteng, was knocked out in the semi-finals.

However, I feel that I can hold my head high for being able to play against the best in the world. It was an experience I’ll cherish forever and an honour to represent South Africa in an international contest,” he said.

Clifford said this was his first time competing in the event and travelling overseas and admitted he was a little overwhelmed.

“Both the nerves and excitement unfortunately affected my game, but it all prepared me for the next time I go,” he added.

Clifford said that after winning his first session he felt confident going on but also knew it wouldn’t be so easy going forward, as his first opponent had been out of practice.

“From then on it was tough going as the guys who followed were all former champions and certainly kept the pressure on. After a short while I resorted to consoling myself with taking some frames from previous world champs, which I managed to do, achieving my ambition. Things changed on day three when I won that first session as well, proving that I can hold my own if I can keep the nerves at bay. The last match was a close game and I put up a good fight until a mistake cost me the match in a decider frame,” he explained.

Outside the competition the pool players from all countries are a close-knit group at the top, with lots of friendships forged over many years. It was amazing to see the camaraderie in the halls of the Imperial Hotel.

He said he didn’t get much ‘tourist time’ but from what he did experience of England, the countryside was beautiful and the rich history shows in its buildings in the towns. The heat was the most unexpected thing while over there.

“Thank you again to all who helped me go that far in the sport I love. My wish is that others get the same chance. Last, but not least, huge thanks to Shona Aylward and the Herald for championing my cause. To see the finances needed accumulate over a few months was an absolute blessing and beyond my expectations. Once the figures have been finalised, I hope to donate to another worthy cause, as promised.”
