The new chief whip was sworn in under oath by Magistrate Basil King, and replaces Zithulele Gilbert Maphumulo who died in February.

During the presentation Councillor Chetty said he was humbled and immensely proud to be serving communities in a municipality named after his close ally and mentor.

“My journey to this point began some 34 years ago when, as a young peace activist, I made a conscious and deliberate choice to work towards building a united, non-racial and democratic South Africa.”

Councillor Chetty said he owed a lot to the late Ray Nkonyeni for what he is today, because he taught him patience, love and humanity.

“In times of crisis, when our hopes were dashed by the merciless killings across our region, Mr Nkonyeni motivated us to work for peace, justice and human rights, despite his own family being killed at the hands of political thugs.”

Mr Chetty acknowledged Joyce Mngoma, who was present during the ceremony and said she had been a mentor and motherly figure to him for 32 years.

The new chief whip also thanked his wife, Reneera and daughter, Anika, for their support

The municipality also wished the new chief whip the best in the execution of his duties.
