Hibberdene Happenings: Axel is moving to Maritzburg

It is hoped to see him again from time to time.

WELL-KNOWN to many, and especially to the Methodist community, Axel Axelson, of Melville, is relocating and will be moving in to a retirement home in Pietermaritzburg shortly. Axel will be missed and it is hoped to see him again from time to time.

He and his late wife Marian were very active in the church and Axel single-handedly was responsible for tiling the floors of the-then new kitchen/tea area of the church several years ago.

Next time

The delicious smell of curry wafted through the church buildings after the service last Sunday when the youth group sold curry and rice as a fund-raiser for the group. Judging by all the hurrying and scurrying taking place, a brisk trade was done, and it certainly smelt divine.

Your scribe unfortunately did not book ahead of time and missed out, but will be sure to be in the queue next time. Thanks to Cecil McDonald and his band of assistants for all their hard work and effort.

Supper included

Hare Krishna Society will hold its monthly enlightenment session at the Hibberdene Library on Saturday, August 18, at 3pm. An open invitation is extended to all to attend and supper will be served. Contact Rajin Mahabeer at 0828362758 for more information.

Next market

Stallholders will gather at Mtwalume again on Saturday, September 8, from 9am onwards when the spring flea and craft market takes place.

The venue is the grassed area adjoining the pool at Koelwaters Resort and the format will be as per normal, with food, refreshments, jewellery, crafts, as well as the usual ‘goodies’, plus live music with Andy Els.

Tables will once again be free of charge – contact Sue at 039 9721425.

Fair warning

And with the Michaelmas school holidays just around the corner, you know it’s almost time for Hibberdene’s annual spring fair. To be held at the Town Hall on October 5 and 6, booking for tables is open and may be made with Marie at 082 2935757. Charges are R30 per day, with bookings preferably given for the two days. Security is provided overnight, so do not worry about the safety of your goods, either during the day or night.

Clinic info

The next eye clinic takes place on Wednesday, August 15, from noon onwards. Contact your scribe at 073 1653961 for a booking. There are very few bookings for this month’s clinic, so it may be necessary to cancel for August and hold it in September instead, but you will be kept posted.

Many happy returns

Doug Henderson turned 70 last Sunday and is heartily congratulated. Your scribe was aware that it was his birthday, but not aware of the significance of the special day. Other birthdays to be celebrated are those of Sue Abrahams and Evelyn Priebe (8th), Methodist local preacher Rosemary Erasmus of Margate, who turns 80 on the 9th, Charmaine Barnwell, Leonie Steyn and Rudolf Rossouw (10th), Gerda Joubert and Adri Theron (11th), Thobile Phungulu and Flip Tempel (12th), and Irene Marshall, Basil Wahl and Hennie Tempel (13th).

Remember to keep Lizzie busy with Hibberdene news and snippets.
