Joy as first-time Merlewood homeowners receive keys

Mayor Cynthia Mqwebu said more that R30-million had been set aside for this project, which aimed to restore the dignity of the previously disadvantaged, especially women.

Some 71 people, 55 of whom are women, will be receiving brand new houses in Merlewood.

Five of these were handed the keys to their new homes by Ray Nkonyeni Municipality officials at a ceremony on Tuesday this week.

Mayor Cynthia Mqwebu said more that R30-million had been set aside for this project, which aimed to restore the dignity of the previously disadvantaged, especially women.

“Previously, women were excluded from owning property because men were given priority, but this has changed,” the mayor said.

Despite the hiccups the project had experienced since it began, the mayor said these were a thing of the past as the municipality’s project steering committee had stepped in to ensure things now ran smoothly.

“The contractor is currently busy with individual water and sewer connections to the 71 units, 46 of which have been completed and are ready for occupation.”

“I am sure that the process of ensuring that you get title deeds, confirming your ownership of the property will be starting soon. I wish you all the happiest stay in your houses, they are yours and please do take care of them.”
