Acrid odour pollutes Southport’s air

Ugu's Environmental Health Services are investigating.

The Southport community is complaining bitterly about an acrid smell which is enveloping the area, mostly at night.

However, no one seems to be able to identify where the odour, described as a ‘toxic burning smell’, is coming from.

France Zama, spokesman for Ugu District Municipality, said the municipality’s Environmental Health Services were investigating.

“Findings will be communicated once complete,” he added.

Several residents have contacted the Herald about the suffocating smell, which has, they say, been prevalent for the last week or two.

“It is terrible,” said one resident. “It smells like something is being burned somewhere, day and night, and it burns your eyes and throat.

“I doubt it is sugar cane – it smells more like rubbish. It is really bad, and if we are suffering, just think of the poor animals whose sense of smell is so much stronger than ours.”
