Hibberdene Happenings: Two deaths sadden community

John Paul of Leisuredene Village died as a result of a nasty fall and Vicky Johnson-Robson died in hospital the very next day.

IT HAS been a sad week for Hibberdene with the deaths of two residents on two consecutive days. John Paul (84) of Leisuredene Village died as a result of a nasty fall at his home after having been initially admitted to Port Shepstone Regional Hospital. John had no close relatives in the area, but was loved by many and will be sadly missed.

Sincere condolences

Vicky Johnson-Robson (76), a resident of Hibberdene River Resort, died in hospital the very next day, after being admitted a few days earlier. She will be mourned by her many friends at the resort, and particularly by her husband Arthur and children Sean, Vanessa (in Australia), Glen, Karen and Lisa, from Mozambique. No funeral arrangements have been finalised as yet, but she will be fondly remembered by many.

Go for breakfast

There are two important events to diarise for this Saturday, August 18, the first of which is Mizpah Church’s men’s breakfast, which takes place bright and early at the church premises at 7am. It is open to men of any denomination at a cost of R20 per person.

So if it’s a brisk early morning excursion, a time of fellowship and a delicious meal you’re wanting, contact Edgar at 084 5820772 for more information.

Or for supper

Second event up, at 3pm that afternoon, is the Hare Krishna Society’s enlightenment session, which sees a change in venue for this month’s gathering.

It will take place at the Hibberdene Library and everyone is most welcome to attend. Supper will be served and Rajin Mahabeer may be contacted at 082 8362758 for more information.

Popular market

Don’t miss Mtwalume’s spring flea and craft market to be held on Saturday, September 8, from 9am onwards. Venue is the lovely grassed area adjoining the swimming pool at Koelwaters Resort and, judging from past markets, a great time is in store for marketgoers. Tables are once again free of charge and the usual flea market goods and more will be available. Great music will be supplied by Andy Els, so head on down to Mtwalume for a day of fun and bargains. Contact Sue Paterson at 039 9721425 or 082 4002616 for more information.

Plan for the fair

Remember to book for Hibberdene’s spring fair to be held on Friday and Saturday, October 5 and 6, at the town hall and its surrounding areas. It will follow the same format as in previous years and tables will be hired out at R30 a day, but preferably R60 for the two days. Contact Marie at 082 2935757 to book. And remember that all exhibits will be perfectly safe overnight – security staff come in once the stalls close and will keep a watchful eye on all goods.

Weekend visitors

The Women’s Day long weekend appears to have had its fair share of visitors although the weather, Thursday in particular, was not conducive to going out and having fun. Fortunately it cleared and became warmer as the weekend wore on.

Spare a thought

Several people are not well at present and need to be remembered in the community’s thoughts and prayers. Richard O’Neill, Trevor Hazell and Barry Jones have been in and out of hospital and it is hoped that their health shows an improvement soon.

Happy occasions

Joan and Edgar Lilje celebrate their 45th anniversary on August 18, Isobel and Malcolm McManus celebrate theirs on the 21st and Louise Steenkamp is warmly wished for becoming a septuagenarian (14th). Others celebrating birthdays this week are Johan Smit (14th), Theunis Snyman (15th), Rosemary Rasper (17th), and Oriel Killian on the 21st.

Don’t forget to keep Lizzie busy with all things Hibberdene.
