Margate Scout Ariana receives the Springbok award
To be associated with such an outstanding organisation like 1st Margate Scout group is something Ariana is proud of.
In 2011 Ariana Smith joined 1st Margate Scouts as an adventure with a friend – and what an adventure it turned out to be!
Aside from camping, hiking, knotting, backwards cooking, building structures, writing reports, planning and organising, shooting, nursing blisters, lack of sleep, sunburn and so much more, it is the holistic development of body, mind and soul that makes scouts so amazing.

“Apart from all the skills Ariana developed during the past almost seven years, she has also made many friends and built lifelong relationships. Scouts forge a very special bond because of shared interests and hardships. For us as parents, experiencing Ariana’s development from a short little busybody to an adult able to take on so many different challenges and responsibilities, we are amazed by all the skills she has been taught. Listening to the animated stories after camps and hikes, projects and activities, is amusing and entertaining, but the gratitude and pride we feel can never be justified in words.” says Ariana’s mother, Judy Smith.
One very important aspect of Scouts is being a Scouter, who voluntarily offers time and expertise to develop individual scouts. Without their selfless dedication, the organisation and 1st Margate Scouts cannot exist.
Because of their inspiring motivation and unwavering support over the years, Arianahas now received the Springbok award.
It is with great pride and honour that the 17-year-old young woman dons her advancement-badged shirt and Scout accessories every week. Drawing from her development and experience at 1st Margate Scouts, she will be able to enter the future with confidence and take on whatever life throws at her. Being a Scout has moulded her into the confident, bubbly, highly-skilled individual she is today.
