Learn more about marine spatial planning bill at tomorrow’s meeting
The passing of the marine spatial planning bill will cause the watering down or avoidance of applicable pieces of legislation and agreements regarding Marine Protected Areas.

All communities are called to participate in an education awareness on the marine spatial planning bill at a meeting taking place at the Margate Town Hall tomorrow, August 21 at 10.30am.

The marine spatial planning bill is used as a framework for the marine spatial planning framework. Whilst the bill is welcomed and is needed to govern how parts of the Indian Ocean will be used and protected for the present and future generations.
There are numerous concerns that have risen regarding the marine spatial planning bill and find many discrepancies glaring throughout the bill’s processes.
The bill does not place the responsibility with the departments responsible as delegated by the SA Constitution and rather shares this responsibility to Director Generals of various departments and those individual departments who are not mandated as per the act.
The bill does not give us much information and is very silent on its real purpose of those who will be affected the most with their livelihoods, recreation and tourism jobs.

The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance will be hosting a community meeting before the public hearing to inform beach users and people who depend on the ocean about the intentions of the bill.
