Southport smell traced to local farm

A prohibition notice to cease all dumping on the farm has been served.

AFTER a thorough investigation into complaints about the ‘terrible smell’ reported by Southport residents, Ugu Environmental Health Services visited various farms in the area for inspection.

The only source of smell identified thus far, said Ugu, was from Sanderstead farm.

“The farm had been used as a dumping site for garden refuse over a period of time.

“A fire caused by vandals broke out recently and this could possibly have contributed to the unpleasant odour experienced by the residents,” said France Zama, spokesman for Ugu District Municipality.

Mr Zama added that a site meeting had been held with the owner of the farm and a prohibition notice to cease all dumping on the farm had been served.

“No complaints were received after this intervention. However, our Environmental Health Office will continue to vigilantly monitor the situation.”
