WARNING: Some South Coast beaches remain unsafe for bathing – find out if your beach is protected

Despite 'no bathing' signs being displayed at Scottburgh, swimmers are still taking to the water.

THE KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board is yet to make an appealing enough offer to striking employees who have taken to industrial action in order to have their wages increased and, it would seem as though many beachgoers have completely forgotten that most beaches are not protected.

Currently, only 11 South Coast beaches have sharks nets in place and allow for bathers to safely enjoy the ocean.

The beaches protected are: Hibberdene, Umzumbe, Southport, St Michaels, Uvongo, Lucien, Margate, Ramsgate, Southbroom, San Lameer and Trafalgar.

Scottburgh Main Beach, an iconic beach enjoyed by many bathers and surfers alike has had its nets removed some weeks ago and despite a no bathing sign being displayed, it would appear as though the ban has not been enforced.

Head of Operations at the KZN Sharks Board, Mike Anderson-Reade advised beachgoers to check in with lifeguards in order to establish if bathing is allowed.
