Hibberdene Happenings: Pick and choose events to attend
Thanks to those who sent in snippets of news, photos and items for publication, as well as provided support in times of stress.
LAST week’s rain was most welcome and hopefully spring will soon be on its way. The August winds arrived on time, so there’s no reason not to expect the warmer weather to as well.
Church breakfasts
Remember to diarise the following dates for the months to come. The first Saturday of every month – the Methodist men’s breakfast at 7am at a cost of R20 per person; every third Saturday of the month – Mizpah Church’s men’s breakfast, also at 7am and also R20.

The Methodists will meet this Saturday, September 1, and Mizpah on September 15. Please note that both breakfasts are open to all men and confirmation should be made with Louis Nortjé (039 6992610) or Debbie Fletcher (039 6992948) prior to the preceding Thursday in the case of the Methodists and with Edgar Lilje (Mizpah) at 084 5820772.
Enlightenment with supper
The Hare Krishna movement meets, normally on the third or fourth Saturday of the month, for an enlightenment session to which everyone is invited. Sessions normally take place at the Hibberdene Care Centre at 3pm and supper is served, but Rajin Mahabeer may be contacted at 082 8362758 for more information. This month’s session takes place at the centre on Saturday, September 22 at 3pm.
Clinic details
The next eye clinic takes place on Wednesday, September 19, from noon onwards. Bookings may be made with your scribe at 039 6992536 or 073 1653961.
Mtwalume market
At last the time has almost arrived for the Mtwalume spring flea and craft market to be held on Saturday, September 8, from 9 o’clock onwards.
To be held on the grass adjoining the swimming pool at Koelwaters Resort, the market will have something for everyone – ranging from snacks, meals, cooldrinks, jewellery and fancy goods – to Andy Els’s toe-tapping tunes which will have everyone singing along.
Be the ‘potjie king’
Blue Waters Pub and Grill is holding a ‘King of the South Coast Potjie Competition’ on Sunday, September 23.
Put together a family team and pay R100 to enter – or a company team for R300.
Entry is free for visitors and potjiekos will be available at R25 per plate. Contact Gezina at 039 6998000 or 079 8183217 or Daleen at 039 3120962 and 072 8785721.
Annual spring fair
And not to forget Hibberdene’s annual spring fair on Friday and Saturday, October 5 and 6. Tables will be hired out at R30 per day, but preferably R60 for the two days. The kitchen area, with its serving hatch to the main hall, will be much sought after by caterers so get your bookings in with plenty of time to spare. There will be food available, jewellery, cakes and tarts, books, plants and a whole lot more, including a white elephant stall, jumble and car boot sales. Profit from hiring of sites goes to the Lions Club of Hibberdene, so please come along and support a wonderful cause.
Thank you
Your scribe is extremely grateful for all the bread sealers which have been donated of late – some packets are large, some small, but every little bit counts.
Support the team
Residents of Mtwalume are taking matters into their own hands regarding the neatness of their town and are fixing potholes, generally sprucing up the town and planting flower beds along the streets. This is indeed commendable and perhaps some areas of Hibberdene could benefit from a similar spring clean. Please give Estelle Symcox and others spearheading this drive all the support you can.
