An outing to Herald office inspires homeschoolers

The visit aimed to give the children an insight into how a newspaper operates and the roles various employees play in the production of the paper.

A large group of homeschoolers spent some time last Friday learning about the South Coast Herald, and what it takes to make a newspaper tick.

Judging from their feedback the children thoroughly enjoyed their experience at the Herald, and learnt alot – what it takes to be a journalist, a graphic designer or an editor.

The children did an extensive tour around the Herald offices and visited the editorial, classified, advertising and production departments, and were introduced to the editor, Colleen Haggard, production manager, Brennan Raymond and sales manager, Sue Pillay.

Many on-the-spot questions were asked by both the children and their parents.

Here is what the homeschoolers wrote about their trip to the Herald:

“This experience encouraged me to read the newspaper,” said Emmanel van Reenen (11).

“I really liked learning about all the people it takes to make a newspaper,” says Nikki Brugts (14)

“I had lots of fun,” says Ella Spittal (8)

“I would like to be a journalist, it seems exciting,” says Eva Hannaway (7)

“It was interesting learning about the different people and jobs. My favourite job was the editor,” says Ella Hannaway.

“I have learnt today that to be a journalist you need to be fast and get even the tiniest detail, and then get back (to the office) as fast as you can,” says Abigail van Reenen (9)

“I enjoyed the educational experience of learning how a newspaper is put together and all the hard working people who make it possible,” says Jenna Philp (11).
