Not only is coastal grassland a highly threatened biome, but Rennie’s beach hosts many rare, endemic plant species, apart from providing a wonderful display of flowers in spring and summer. Please register as an IAP with L.fada@isolendalo.co.za.
The applicant is Masjidus-Saeed whose website lists two projects, one being a lifestyle gated-village in Lenasia and the other a residential development in Port Edward.
Public meeting
In the continuing saga of the borrow pits (quarries) required for gravel and sand for the proposed repair/upgrade to a section of the R61, the next public meeting will be held at the Methodist Church Hall in Port Edward on September 19 at 4.30pm regarding two new proposed sites.
This will be the second such meeting as, due to objections from concerned parties, plans for the first site (behind Tragedy Hill) were cancelled. The new proposed sites are about 2km inland, between Port Edward and Leisure Bay, and approximately 1.5km inland from Palm Beach. All concerned residents are urged to attend.
Greens treatment

Local bowling clubs will be closing for much needed spring ‘facelifts’. The Port Edward Bowling Club held its final function on Sunday when the men vied for supremacy against the women. The best ‘man’ won – the women! Each year this ritual is performed with good-natured heckling and joviality. Bowlers will have to hang up their hats for a month or two.
Planting fun
To honour Arbor Day last Friday, Leisure Bay Conservancy members, volunteers and a group of enthusiastic youngsters from a local school, planted many indigenous trees in and around Leisure Bay.

Jenny Koen commented “What an amazing morning we had. Pupils from the Christian Family College in Glenmore were fantastic! We all had such fun planting the many items – with a whole lot of laughter and love. Thanks to everyone concerned!”
Raising funds
The MOTH Association (Memorable Order of Tin Hats) will hold a fund-raising dinner this Saturday (September 8). High Rock Pub and Grill in Palm Beach will provide a delicious dinner. There will be spot prizes and ‘Billy the Skit’ will entertain. To book, please contact Alistair at 0827872633.
Afternoon at the museum
Trafalgar Garden Club held its August meeting at the Munster Motor Museum. Robin Broide, who lives on Sithela Estate, arranged the venue and gave a very informative talk on indigenous trees.

Club members enjoyed a leisurely browse around lovely old vintage cars, a delicious tea and a gentle amble around the lovely dam on the estate.
In full bloom
Your scribe is presently enjoying the spring flowers on the West Coast. The weather has been superbly kind and the display of wildflowers from Melkbosstrand to Clanwilliam has been awesome. The area is full of tour buses and accommodation is at a premium. It has been an outstanding showing this year.
