Retailer powers up Thanda Community Centre

The visit coincided with the official handover of the R80 000 solar power equipment they have donated to the Centre.

Their slogan is simple, ‘make the difference’. So last Friday they really lived up to it by bringing early Christmas to the Early Childhood Development Centre (ECD) children.

Woolworth’s East Coast Division visited the Thanda Community Centre in the deep rural area of Mtwalume about 40km from Port Shepstone.

They brought fruit, cakes, chips, sweets and soft drinks for the youngsters. Their visit coincided with the official handover of the R80 000 solar power equipment they have donated to the Centre.

Apart from the ECD programme, Thanda provides children from grades R to 9 with after-school and holiday programmes and runs an organic farm programme with more than 270 farmers across 18 farms.

Through farming and ECD training, the non-profit organisation also opens up employment and enterprise development opportunities for unemployed youth and adults.

“We are very grateful for the support of Woolworths and their staff for ensuring that every building at our Community Centre is connected to electricity,” said Angela Larkan, executive director and co-founder of Thanda Community Centre.

Head of Woolworths KZN divisional office, Kay Raidoo, said: “It was a great way for KZN Woolies’ employees, their families and friends to come together and do good for a local organisation that has a phenomenal impact in their community.”
