A pint for a pint helps save a life

Shoppers donated a pint of blood in exchange for a pint of beer or a softdrink.

Following the urgent appeal for all South Africans to donate blood, Margate Round Table held an initiative to assist with the dangerously low blood supply that the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) announced recently. The ‘Pint for a Pint’ blood drive was held at the Hibiscus Mall last Saturday, when shoppers donated a pint of blood in exchange for a pint of beer or a soft drink.

Chairman of Margate Round Table 46, Henk Nortje has his blood sugar levels tested by Phumla Chonco of the South African National Blood Service.

Table 46 chairman Henk Nortje said the drive also raised awareness of the need for regular blood donations to ensure the quality, safety and availability of blood and blood products for patients in need.

“The transfusion of blood helps save millions of lives every year. It can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with a higher quality of life, and supports complex medical and surgical procedures,” explained Mr Nortje.
