Rain turns Southport roadway into ditch

Calls to have the section of road repaired fell on deaf ears.

Lack of maintenance on a provincial road has caused major problems for motorists on the P198 near Southport.

The locally based Department of Transport is to take the rap for this one, as calls to have the road repaired and drainage cleaned out months ago were ignored.

On Monday this week, several vehicles had to be towed from the ditch on the P198, previously known as the ‘old Durban road’.

According to a motorist who uses the road on a daily basis, a drainage pipe had been blocked for months.

“We reported the blockage to the Department of Transport but nothing was done. Now, with the recent rains, it has damaged the road and caused a huge ditch. Many schoolchildren and workers could not reach school and work on time. Must we always wait for a disaster to get things happening?” asked the motorist.

Passengers travelling in this taxi wait for the vehicle to be towed from the ditch on the P198 near Southport.

On Tuesday this week the road had still not been repaired. The Department of Transport in Pietermartizburg was contacted for comment but none had been forthcoming at the time of going to print.
