Commission wants corrupt politicians probed

The commission said most politicians were killed as a result of the tender system.

The Moerane Commission of Inquiry into political killings has called for all corrupt activities by public officials, politicians and business people to be placed under investigation.

During last Thursday’s KwaZulu-Natal legislature sitting, KZN premier Willis Mchunu, made the commission’s report public and called for a collective effort in dealing with the killings.

The report presented devastating evidence on how access to resources through the tender system was the root cause of political murders.

It also found that the culture of violence in the province had escalated due to self-interest.

On the Lower South Coast, a number of politicians had been gunned down in the comfort of their homes or while addressing meetings.

As the 2019 elections draw closer, one of the recommendations made in the report was that organisations immediately resolve their differences.

The commission also found that factional, internal and intra-party intolerance often resulted in violent conflict.

Another recommendation made was putting an end to political deployments in public service posts and appointing appropriately qualified individuals.

Saps also came under fire, with the report noting “incompetence” or political manipulation as being among the reasons the public had lost confidence in the criminal justice system.
