More than R170 000 each had been paid out to families who had lodged claims, some dating as far back as 14 years.

Of the 146 claimants, 142 reportedly opted to take the cash which totalled R25-million.

Beneficiaries who were paid out belonged to the Masakhane community, which includes farms adjacent to Southbroom to Trafalgar.

All beneficiaries were reportedly paid out directly without going through a trust that sometimes served as mediators.

Provincial Department of Agriculture said the claim was yet to be gazetted as the minister still needed to sign off the deal.
