Looking back on South Coast history: November 5 to 11

Some violence was real, but some of it was just ‘good clean fun’.

High-speed motoring had its uses.

November 5

1993
“A young Margate man owes his life to two policemen who made a mercy dash from Durban to Margate Hospital with snake-bite serum.”

November 6

1992
It was the end of an era. “The entire contents of the La Crete Hotel in Uvongo will come under the hammer on Tuesday, November 24.”

And there was some comic relief. “A 15-month-old, 250kg heifer caused chaos when she walked across the roof of a house in Ramsgate in the middle of the night and then kept her would-be captors at bay for more than three hours.”

1998
Some earlier hotspots never really cooled down. “Despite visits by high profile political leaders three weeks ago, violence has flared up again in Shobashobane.”

November 7

1997
Accidents continued to happen in the same places. “Another truck careered out of control down Sugar Bush Hill this week, killing a seven-year-old school pupil.”

November 8

1991
“Quick thinking by a bank official and good detective work by members of the Port Shepstone SAP have resulted in the Arrest of an eight-member fraud syndicate who were being sought countrywide. One member of the gang was being sought for credit card fraud of R1,8-million. It is believed that the syndicate is also linked to R100 000 cheque book fraud committed in Port Shepstone.”

November 10

1995
“Leaders from all the political parties will visit the South Coast as part of the KwaZulu-Natal United Nations 50th Anniversary Celebrations Peace Tour.”

While entertainment was anything but peaceful. “Flour bombs, balls of soggy mielie meal and general mayhem heralded the start of the ninth Umtamvuna Raft Race.”

2000
“Many South Coasters went without their morning cup of tea yesterday (Wednesday) thanks to power failures caused by the severe thunderstorm the previous night.”
