Dead duiker found in snare sweep

She said the neighborhood has had many problems with dogs getting caught in illegal snares.

A TEAM effort comprising various groups recently embarked on a snare sweep in Margate’s Gayridge, Extension 3 and Extension 7 areas.

The neighbourhood crime watch for the area joined forces with Wolf Security, AfriForum and other volunteers to extend a helping hand.

Within a period of two-and-a-half hours they collected 10 snares.

Two days later Wolf Security embarked on another sweep, where another seven snares were found.

Two dead duiker were found in the snares and had apparently been there for some time.

“This re-iterates the importance of educating the community about the snare sweeps,” said Jo-Anne Wentzel, administrator of the crime and neighbourhood watch for Gayridge and Margate Extension 3 and 7.

She said the neighborhood had had problems with dogs getting caught in illegal snares.

“We have a lot of green belt areas, close to some nature reserves. Our wildlife is declining as a result of these snares. These snares are often forgotten, especially when the people that put them there move out of the area,” she said. “Wildlife and domestic pets then die a very cruel and long death as a result of this. We can only just imagine how much more we can do for our wildlife and community, if we have more manpower and events like these.”

She encouraged local schools with environmental groups, and all other parties interested to stand united in these snare sweeps, and to make a difference.

“This will also assist in educating our youth on the difference they we can make by uniting as a community and creating nature awareness and appreciation,” she said.
