Sparks from an electrical distribution board set Umzinto church alight

Even though churchgoers were forced to watch in horror as their church was consumed by flames, they still believe God will see them through this.

BETHEL New Life Fellowship Church in Umzinto fell victim to a blazing fire at around 5.15pm last Wednesday.

“We were in the building with a few children and teachers who were preparing for Christmas play rehearsals, when we noticed sparks coming out of our electric distribution board,” said lead pastor of the church, Jared Subramoney.

They immediately evacuated the building and within moments, several items on the stage caught alight from the sparks. The fire then spread throughout the church ceiling, stage and towards the back of the church.

“At this stage, we do not want to speculate the exact cause. However, we can assure you that this was not a malicious act,” said Pastor Jared.

Damaged and destroyed goods include the church’s entire sound system, musical instruments, electronic equipment and other valuables.

“We want to thank God for His protection of every child and teacher that was present at the time of the incident. We thank God that though the building may have burnt down, the church – the people – are still alive. The building may have been destroyed, but not the church,” he said.

Members of the church extend their thanks to all those who responded on the day, and to those who have been showing constant support and offering to help in any way possible after the incident.

Pastor Jared also thanks Umdoni Fire Department for services rendered, as they put their lives at risk to try and save the building.

Even though churchgoers were forced to watch in horror as their church was consumed by flames, they still believe God will see them through this.

“We are comforted and at peace because of the hope we have in Him. In 2017, we lost our visionary but not the vision. This year, we lost the building but not the church – we will rise.”
