Three drown in separate South Coast incidents

One of the men had reportedly suffered an epileptic fit.

A man and two children drowned in separate incidents on the South Coast recently.

In the latest incident the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), Port Edward crew was called to a drowning in progress at Kidds Beach, Leisure Bay on Tuesday this week.

NSRI spokesman, Craig Lambinon said the Police Search and Rescue Unit together with NSRI swimmers and Med-Evac paramedics searched for the missing 12-year-old boy.

“It appears that bystanders using a body board had reached the child in the surf but they were unable to secure him before the surf swept him away and they were forced to return to shore.”

Yesterday (Wednesday) there was no sign of the child. The search will continue.

Margate police responded to a call from Nkampini location near Margate on Sunday.

“A 23-year-old man was doing washing at the Mbizana river when he seems to have suffered an epileptic fit and fallen into the river,” said police spokesman, Sergeant Sibu Ncane of Margate police.

“He could not get help and drowned. The identity of the man cannot be revealed until the next of kin have been informed.”

An inquest docket has been opened and Margate detectives are investigating.

Also on Sunday, a 16-year-old was swimming in a river near Cwabeni Bridge in the Mehlomnyama area when he got into difficulties and drowned.

The police’s Search and Rescue Unit recovered the body. An inquest docket has been opened for investigation.
