Yet again the event attracted a full house of players from as far afield as Cape Town, Johannesburg, Ladysmith, Pietermaritzburg, Durban, Richards Bay as well as a number of teams from Port Shepstone.

This event was a little sombre as the resort had lost one of its staff members who was on the organising committee for the competition. Irvin Barnabas died recently after a short illness.

Coming third are locals Meshan Lanka and Naeem Bhaijee of Port Shepstone.

As always at thunee tournaments, there were numerous threats to four-ball (penalise) competitors, and partners ‘chirped’ each other after each hand. At some points it did get a bit tense but remained clean and fair under the watchful eye of the judges.

Taking second spot are Swaleh Khan (left) and Sogan Gounder from Ladysmith.

As always, the big tournament, which has been going on for the past four years, started off with a bhangra and old school music evening at Chico’s restaurant last Friday night, where DJ Preshan and DJ Daniel entertained.

Thunee winners

Last year’s winners, from Port Shepstone, were knocked out in the second round. This year’s tournament winners were Preshane Tayob and Stephen Chetty from Pietermaritzburg, who took home the R10 000 cash prize.

Having a blast at the bhangra and old school music event at Chico’s restaurant last Friday are (from left) Avril Naicker, Zelia van As and Ajith Barath.

In second place, Swaleh Khan and Sogan Gounder from Ladysmith, won R6 000 and third placed Meshan Lanka and Naeem Bhaijee of Port Shepstone won R4 000.

Wild Coast Sun organiser of the competition, Anandh Perumal, said the final tournament for the year was a great success.

The winners of the 2018 Thunee Classic Challenge played at the Wild Coast Sun Hotel and Casino Resort last Saturday are Preshane Tayob (middle) and Stephen Chetty from Pietermaritzburg. They are congratulated by Rajen Thandrayen (left) from Diageo, a leading premium drinks company which was one of the major sponsors at the event.

The next tournament will be held in June next year.

Mr Perumal thanked all players and sponsors. “This competition has grown and has become very popular. It was also pleasant to see women taking part.”
