South Coast school receives Subz donation

Miss Barnes established Project Dignity as a way of meeting the needs of South African schoolgirls.

AMAGCINO Primary in Umgababa was recently visited by members of Project Dignity who distributed reusable feminine hygiene products to the schoolgirls.

The school was the 58th and final school to be visited by the non-profit organisation.

“This year, some 9 341 young women from disadvantaged communities across the country received packs of reusable Subz Pants and Pads that will last them up to five years,” said Sue Barnes, founder of Subz Pants and Pads and the NPO extension, Project Dignity.

Miss Barnes established Project Dignity as a way of meeting the needs of South African schoolgirls.

According to Project Dignity, a lack of access to sanitary products forces many girls to miss up to a week a month of classroom time, detrimentally impacting their education and future prospects.

The organisation relies on donations to help them meet the needs of these young women. Since its establishment in 2010, it has donated around 140 000 packs of reusable sanitary wear nationwide. These packs are expected to last each girl throughout high school if used and cared for properly.

When these products are handed over, the Project Dignity group also presents an interactive talk on puberty and feminine health.

The donation to Amagcino Primary was made possible by Australian philanthropist, Fiona Waller whose contribution will also go towards next year’s donations.

Miss Barnes thanked all sponsors for helping make this organisation such a success, year after year.
