Buckle up, stay safe and have fun

The South Coast has a number of activities planned this holiday season.

As the festive season draws closer, the South Coast has been abuzz with a number of planned activities which will guarantee holidaymakers a fun, safe and happy holiday season.

Kicking off the activities, as thousands of upcountry visitors started making their way to the South Coast, was the drive by local law enforcement officers to welcome motorists, and provide them with safety tips and emergency contact details.

Festive season road safety awareness roadblocks were conducted at Port Shepstone’s ‘confusion junction’ on December 8 and 11, with transport MEC Mxolisi Kaunda and members of the provincial legislature in attendance

On both days, traffic officers and police checked driver’s licences, permits and the roadworthiness of vehicles, as well as checking that motorists were not drinking and driving.

Acting transport portfolio chairman Mbali Fraser said intensified traffic law enforcement activities will be carried out during December in an effort to reduce the number of road accidents and fatalities.

“We really want to wish South Coasters and holidaymakers a beautiful festive season but at the same time, a safe one. Remember your fast drive could be your last one.”

Local law enforcement officers and Ugu cluster Saps have also beefed up their visibility on beaches, with the RNM public safety department having employed extra reservists to enforce by-laws.

The fun starts with the South Coast Carnival Parade from Uvongo Town Hall to St Michael’s beach on Saturday, December 15.

The parade will start at 11am and end at around 1pm. Marshals, accompanied by six security vehicles, have been employed to keep the procession in order and ensure safety. Two medics will be on standby throughout the parade.

Entertainment will be provided by well-known TV personalities, radio deejays and performers including Somizi Mhlongo, Julian Damon, Steve Fataar, Mickey Mayoub, Luke Lambert, Dj Tira and others.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality and Ugu South Coast Tourism have promised an incredible and exciting assortment of activities to appeal to all ages.

On Sunday, December 16, St Michael’s beach will host local artists at the South Coast Homecoming Picnic, while nature lovers will be heading down to the Mpenjati Nature Reserve for the eco-festival.
