Umdoni prepares for festive season
Roadblocks will be conducted to ensure vehicles are roadworthy, licences will be checked and public transport will be scrutinised to ensure that all safety requirements are met.
Umdoni Municipality has adopted a proactive approach to crime and service delivery ahead of the festive season.
The municipality’s plan, aimed at ensuring the safety of residents and holidaymakers alike, was revealed at a media briefing last week.
According to the municipality, various crime ‘hot spots’ have been identified and resources allocated to these areas. Road safety was identified as a priority and the municipality said work on fixing numerous potholes was well underway.
Positive results of this effort can be seen, particularly in Scottburgh. Funds have also been allocated to restore and rehabilitate roads in rural areas.
Umdoni has calculated that the town can expect around 100 000 visitors on the busiest festive season days.

With this in mind, the municipality will be working in conjunction with ‘Bobbies on the Beat’ to ensure the safety of all. The dispute over responsibility for streetlights has been resolved, with Umdoni having taken over from Eskom.
A project is currently underway to fix damaged lights. Council also adopted a resolution to no longer outsource verge maintenance which, it said, would help create employment. Another topic raised was that of reckless driving, a problem Umdoni Municipality said was rife, particularly over the festive season.
Roadblocks will be conducted to ensure vehicles are roadworthy, licences will be checked and public transport will be scrutinised to ensure that all safety requirements are met.
The municipality’s protection services division will undertake visible policing patrols and provision has also been made to ensure that there is no water supply interruption during the festive period.
