Enjoy planet friendly festive fare this Christmas
With all the summer fruit and veggies in season now it is easy to think seasonal.
ON Christmas day we eat with abandon and drink with merriment – and often forget that our overindulgence can hurt Planet Earth.
If this concerns you, some advice from the World Wildlife Fund and other conservationists could add a green element to your festive celebrations this year. With just a little effort you could make sure your Christmas feast is kind to the environment.
When you shop for meat, poultry, eggs and dairy buy planet-friendly organic and free-range products and support greener, small-scale farming methods.

Choose organic wine or look for wine labels that bear the ‘Conservation Champions’ logo.
Buy fruit and veggies from your local market or from outlets that sell organic and Fairtrade produce. Cut down on your footprint by using in-season produce. With all the lovely summer fruit and veggies coming into season around Christmas time, this will not be hard to do.
Before you shop for seafood and fish, check the South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (Sassi) list of sustainable fish. The green list of species is your best option as the seafood choices listed here are the most sustainable. Think twice before you buy from the orange list and avoid all species on the red list.

Don’t throw away the leftovers. With a bit of imagination you and your family can dine on recycled festive fare for quite a few days after Christmas has come and gone.
