“When the eldest child went to the shop, it is claimed that the four-year-old accidentally set the room alight while playing with matches,” said Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Adam Francis.

A neighbour (14) who was visiting at the time tried unsuccessfully to douse the flames.

“The teenager was slightly burnt as a result of her efforts,” said Captain Adam Francis.

“She and the four-year-old managed to escape, leaving the baby behind.”
