TRIBUTE: Tuppy Joseph – a life well lived, a friend well-loved

Tuppy delivered newspapers for the South Coast Herald.

Beloved son of the South Coast, Indraj ‘Tuppy’ Joseph has died, aged 57.

Tuppy, as he was affectionately known, was born in Port Shepstone. He lived in Umbango and later moved to Marburg.

He came from a humble home and was raised by his mother, Florie.

At the time of his death, he had been one of the delivery drivers for the South Coast Herald, making an impact wherever he went with his friendly personality and caring ways.

Tuppy was educated at Port Shepstone Primary and Marburg Secondary schools.

Over the years he worked in various jobs, from construction to maintenance and more.

He was an active sportsman, and he particularly enjoyed soccer, cricket and volleyball as well as indoor cricket and soccer.

Through these sports he became well-known and made many friends.

He was loved and liked by all who came into contact with him.

Tuppy played soccer for Ashburton Football Club and Marburg Saints.

He played volleyball for a team called Jay’s, which was somewhat formidable in the domestic league back in the day.

He was a die-hard supporter of Tottenham Hotspurs, enjoying the friendly rivalry with friends who supported other clubs.

In 2022, Tuppy joined the South Coast Herald distribution team and enjoyed his Wednesday and Thursday drives distributing the papers and interacting with people.
He fell ill earlier this year, but continued to drive for as long as he could.

Close friend, Raj ‘Doc’ Sookdavu Ramharakh paid tribute to Tuppy, saying that even from an early age he had a charming personality.

“Tuppy was a simple, loving and humble individual. He loved his mother Florie dearly, and his family and friends. Having Tuppy in one’s company was an honour, because there was never a dull moment. He could change an atmosphere of gloom to one of joy, fun and humour. Indeed, he was a live-wire at any function and was a good dancer. He had the knack of fitting into any crowd irrespective of race.”

Tuppy bravely battled his illness, and he faced it with the same quiet strength, courage and dignity that he showed throughout his life.

He never complained, and he fought hard until the very end.

His funeral service was held at Vision Christian Fellowship in Oslo Beach this Wednesday (August 19).
