Community hall roof repairs stall

The municipality has closed the hall due to safety concerns.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) has dismissed claims that it is unable to repair the crumbling Margate community hall due to a rejected insurance claim.

This came after someone who had been wanting to hire the hall was reportedly told by municipal officials that it would not be repaired anytime soon.

The roof of the hall was already in a dilapidated state when a storm in October last year caused part of the roof to collapse.

This prompted the municipality to close the hall due to safety concerns.

However, to date, no progress has been made on repairs to the hall which has deteriorated even further in the interim.

The hall, officially opened by former mayor Nolwazi Shusha in 2010, is believed to have had its fair share of roof trouble prior to completion.

A contractor who had been appointed at the time had reportedly abandoned the project after having difficulties with the roof installation.

Another contractor was then sourced to complete the structure.

Margate extension two resident Tracey Steenkamp who wanted to rent the hall for a function in February told the Herald that she was advised to look elsewhere for a venue as the insurance claim had been declined based on poor workmanship and faulty design.

However RNM spokesman Simon April said the hall would be repaired as soon as the insurance company had finished processing the municipality’s claim.

“The insurance company has requested more information to assist them in processing our claim. This information is being compiled and will be submitted as requested. Rumours that the claim has been declined are therefore incorrect,” he said
