Margate received the award at the sixth SAPS national excellence awards ceremony held in Mpumalanga recently, beating 1164 stations countrywide to take the title.
The brigadier commended the Ray Nkonyeni law enforcement officers, community policing forums and the private security teams for coming on board to combat crime.
“Serious cases have been solved, this shows our team’s commitments and contributions towards service delivery.”
Since the Brigadier took over in June 2017, the station has bagged an array of awards, including thes best station of the year award at the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner’s Excellence Awards and a Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Mayoral Excellence Award.
To receive the station of the year award, various criteria are taken into account. These include performance, client satisfaction (determined by an independent auditor through a survey), neatness and appearance, corporate image, partnerships and effectiveness of community policing forums, and service delivery.
Margate’s statistics, which led to it receiving the award, were impressive.
The station’s overall performance was 82 percent with a reduction in crime of 247 cases and an increased detection rate in all categories as follows:
- Drugs up from 627 to 1012;
- Police action up from 204 to 271;
- Property crimes down by 39 and other serious crimes by 97.
The station also did well with its absenteeism management.
The brigadier says that for the station, it’s not about putting self-interest first but about making sure the community it serves is safe.
“Future plans include a satellite station in Gcilima and ensuring we keep all the wheels turning and communities safe at all times.”
