Harding chief shoots woman in reported road rage incident

A case of attempted murder was opened.

A Harding chief (41) is in hot water after accidentally shooting a pregnant woman while firing shots at a taxi driver in the Santombe area.

It is believed that the chief, who was travelling home from town to his homestead, had become involved in a road rage incident with the taxi driver, who had reportedly crossed into his lane in a bid to avoid potholes.

The chief apparently blocked the taxi, and demanded to know why the driver was in his lane.

The pair exchanged heated words before the chief produced his weapon and fired a shot at the taxi.

A passenger, who is believed to be pregnant, was struck by the bullet. She was rushed to hospital by the taxi driver.

Police spokesman, Sergeant Sibu Ncane confirmed that Harding police had responded to a complaint of attempted murder on the D121 gravel road.

“A bullet penetrated the taxi and injured a passenger in the hip. The taxi driver rushed the 29-year-old woman to St Andrews Hospital where she was admitted.”

A case of attempted murder was opened.

The chief was arrested and appeared in the Harding Magistrate’s Court where he was granted bail of R4 000.

The case was postponed to June 10.
