ALERT: You won’t be penalised for NOT withdrawing your government grant

The new Sassa gold cards work like any other bank card

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) is urging beneficiaries not to withdraw all their funds at once – or all in one day – and to avoid busy places during the first days of the month.

A statement from Sassa said that this was because scammers and thieves target vulnerable people during these times, and rob them.

According to Sassa spokesman Senzeni Ngubeni, the new Sassa gold cards work like any other bank card.

“Beneficiaries will not be penalised for not withdrawing all the money in their accounts.  The remaining funds in the account will still be safe.”

Funds can be withdrawn on any day throughout the month, according to a beneficiary’s needs.

“Those still using the old white Sassa card, however, risk not receiving their grant payments and are encouraged to immediately change to the new Sassa card as no money will be deposited to the old card.”

From April 1, 2019, social grants will increase as follows:

  • Old age up from R1 700 to R1 780 (R80).
  • Disability up from R1 700 to R1 780  (R80) .
  • War veterans grant up from R1 720 to R1 800 (R80).
  •  Foster care grant up from R960 to R1 000 (R40).
  • Child support grant up from R410 to R420 in April and to R430 in October 2019.
