Jan Smuts Road is in trouble

The double lane road has been reduced to a single lane.

Drivers negotiating Jan Smuts Road in Port Shepstone are faced with blaring hooters and sometimes heated confrontations on their weekday commute to and from work and school.

Jan Smuts is a two-lane road off Memorial Road leading to Albersville and the Port Shepstone CBD and is normally gridlocked during school terms when traffic is particularly heavy.

Several people have raised concerns about staff and visitors to the department of education who apparently park not only in the road, but also on the verges.

“As a result, the double lane road has been reduced into a single lane. The area has become congested and is an imminent and hazardous traffic risk. Road users are now compelled to engage in hazardous and unlawful maneuvering in order to reach their destinations, which poses a threat to all road users,” said one.

Potholes add to the problems in Jan Smuts Road near the new department of education offices in Port Shepstone.

He also mentioned that the road is in bad condition, littered with potholes, and that the verges had not been trimmed.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality was approached for comment but none had been received at the time of going to print.
