Set on the shorelines of Durban’s Golden Mile beaches, Deep End brings one of the world’s most popular surfing sites to glorious life.
The film is inspired by award-winning Durban-based director, Eubulus Timothy’s childhood in apartheid Durban.
He had spent years developing the story and finally brings it to the big screen with the support of the KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission, the Department of Trade and Industry, and an extraordinary cast and crew.
Deep End is the story of a young woman who overcomes family pressure and societal racism to pursue her passion that is not culturally acceptable.
She is helped along by an unlikely champion surfer (Kriek) who is trying to escape his drug addiction and his own family demons. Being the apple of her father’s eye, the conflict almost destroys the very foundation of their once strong bond, unmasking pain of his forgotten past.
Speaking to the Herald, the dynamic starlet, Carishma said the movie, which was shot two years ago, has been well received thus far by both local and international audiences.
“The one thing we hear all the time is how well the movie is shot, the cinematography really is exquisite and Durban looks incredible. Its such a beautiful showcase of one of our countries most beautiful cities. People have also really loved the story because I think everyone can relate in some way or another to what Suni is going through.”
She said that what she loves the most is that young women are leaving the movie feeling super inspired to take on new challenges in life.
“I’ve had so many messages from women and young girls saying that I’ve inspired them to give surfing a try or try something new. That truly fills my heart with so much joy because that is my biggest hope for the movie, that people especially women leave feeling inspired.”
Carishma said she is very excited for the release. “I just want the world to see this beautiful movie already,” she added.
“I’m also a bit nervous as you never know how people are going to react. When you are on set you give it your all, but you never truly know what the outcome will be, and then all of a sudden those very raw and real parts of you are up on the big screen for everyone to see.”
