Umtamvuna Views: Water woes worsen in Port Edward

Last month, the water was off for almost half the month and there were no tankers delivering water to frustrated residents.

ON BEHALF of the community, your scribe has been requested to express a collective feeling of dissolution, abandonment and general disgust at the present state of affairs with the Ugu water supply.

Port Edward has been affected the worst – not only have some areas had no water for more than a week, the Ugu call centre phone does not get answered or customers are told all sorts of placatory stories that water will be restored very soon. Nobody seems to know what is going on and residents feel they are just being fobbed off. Last month, the water was off for almost half the month and there were no tankers delivering water to frustrated residents. The situation has become untenable.

Sad tidings

Port Edward estate agency owner Cindy Smith (72)  died on Monday afternoon this week. She suffered a stroke early in the morning and an ambulance took her to Port Shepstone Regional Hospital.

Port Edward was saddened to hear of the death of well-known estate agency owner Cindy Smith, who died on Monday this week.

According to a close friend, the doctor and resuscitation unit worked very hard to revive Cindy but she never regained consciousness. She relocated from Benoni to live in Port Edward in 2004 and owned a holiday home in town for many years. Apart from working as an estate agent, she also started a nursery and did landscaping. Cindy leaves two sons – Wayne, who lives in Australia, and Clive, in England. Her sister Carol van der Merwe also lives in Port Edward.

Apparently there have been reports of a rabid dog in the vicinity of The Pont and all dog owners are advised to make sure that their dogs are vaccinated. State Veterinary Services will hold free annual rabies vaccinations in the Umtamvuna area on the following days:- March 18 – 8.30am to 12.30pm at the Port Edward Library and 1 to 3pm at Nicholson Garage (Munster Motors). On Tuesday (19th) from 8.30to 10.30am at Glenmore Superette; 11am to 12.30pm at Munster Protection Services and from 1 to 3pm at Greenhart Supermarket. On Friday (22nd) from 8.30 to 10am at 7th Heaven in Trafalgar, 10.30am to 12.30pm – Marina Beach Library, and from 1.30 to 2pm at the Mpenjati White House.

Diarise the date

The Port Edward Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association will hold a public meeting next Wednesday (20th) in the Methodist Church hall at 5.30pm and everyone is urged to attend.

Trafalgar Garden Club’s February meeting was held at the home of Dawn Broom in Marina Beach.

Trafalgar Garden Club held its February meeting at the Marina Beach home of artist Dawn Broom. Club member Megan Anderson gave an interesting talk on ‘medicinal plants’.

Dawn is an accomplished artist who draws her inspiration from nature, especially the sea. She uses mainly acrylic paints which are often accompanied by shells, seaweed, dead seed pods, and anything that satisfies her eclectic creative spirit. Her welcoming home is an art display in itself and she exudes passion and warmth. Club member Megan Anderson gave a very interesting, well researched talk on ‘medicinal herbs’, many of which form the basis of modern day drugs.
